The whole world -- including much of Western culture -- is in upheaval, and the birth pains are only growing in strength, it seems.
But then Jesus brushes aside the world's chaotic swarms of noise and problems and says this:
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."
That's John 14:27 (NIV).
These words became deep foundations of rock in the hearts of the brave souls who took Jesus' Name into the dark of the first century. In the midst of such horrors as Rome's total destruction of Jerusalem and the brutal violence that the Empire brought upon Christians at the end of the first century, going into the second century -- in the midst of all that Christians became known for their supernatural, unshakable peace.
It stunned the people of the Roman Empire. The faces of these Christians were shining with unquenchable peace. And the thought occurred to the Romans as they looked with astonishment at the Christians singing worship songs with joy before being martyred: "these people are not of this world."
More accurately: the peace that Christ gives is not of this world.
So do you need true rest, abiding rest, from this insane world? Take refuge in Jesus. Take shelter beneath the shadow of His wings. Seek Him in prayer. Seek Him in His Words. Seek Him under a cloud of worship as you adore Him with songs, declarations, and testimonies to who He is. Believe He can hear you and interact with you. Believe what the Word says about Him: "He is the same yesterday, today, and forever."
Escape from this world's madness by going to the peace that is not of this world.
